2017 February Proposed Closure of Darwen Job Centre – Have Your Say

Proposed Closure of Darwen Job Centre – Have Your Say

Proposed Closure of Darwen Job Centre – Have Your Say

DARWEN JOB CENTRE WILL CLOSE NEXT YEAR…

… If you don’t have Your Say!! The Proposals from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), are that Darwen Job Centre will close in March 2018 unless we send a clear message out to the DWP that we strongly object to this course of action.

This is the statement issued by the DWP on the GOV.UK Website… “This consultation seeks views on proposals for the future of Darwen Jobcentre and the delivery of service to the customers served by this office.

The Department for Work and Pensions does not own any of the property it occupies – the estate is managed under a commercial agreement that delivers fully serviced accommodation. On 31 March 2018 this national contract ends and the department must put new arrangements in place from 1 April 2018.

The end of this contract provides the department an opportunity, by 2018, to transform the way it does business by using the estate in the most efficient and cost effective way. This will represent value for money for the taxpayer and deliver a flexible, high standard service to our customers. A number of our sites are near each other and it makes good sense to plan a more efficient service delivery approach.”

We have the opportunity to respond and prevent this directive, so I call on all of you to Click on the Link below, and review the information yourself and make your views known. All the members of the Darwen Town Council are against this decision, and will do all that we can to prevent the erosion of our services here in Darwen – https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/proposal-for-the-future-of-darwen-jobcentre

The Consultation Document can also be viewed and downloaded here.

Darwen Town Council urges everyone in the Town to ‘Have Their Say’ on this decision, so please don’t think that we can’t keep this vital Local Service open, because together we can.

The consultation period begins on Monday 30 January 2017 and runs until Tuesday 28 February 2017 at 5pm. So please ensure you respond in writing before 5pm on Tuesday 28th February 2017.

Thank You.

  1. If Darwen Job centre closes people already impoverished by lack of work will be driven to the point of despair by being forced to travel on public transport to get to the next Jobcentre. Bus fares will use a significant proportion of their JSA and although transport costs may be reimbursed at interview, job seekers have to have that money available first. At present, Darwen job seekers can walk to the Jobcentre from almost anywhere in the town. Public transport doesn’t always run to schedule and Darweners would have a greater chance of being sanctioned if arriving late for interviews. Would physically disabled job seekers be unfairly mistreated by having to wait for a bus that had room to accommodate them? Let’s not kick people when they are already down. Keep Darwen Jobcentre in Darwen. Common sense should prevail in this situation.

  2. Keep the job centre! !!

  3. This place was essential for my son when he left university, it helped him in a number of ways, not least because he could get there easily when his money was tight. Darwen is steadily losing its banks its market and now its job centre, what a shame.

  4. It is already very difficult if a person hasn’t got a job. They should not have to travel (at Cost) to another centre. Darwen is a town and community in it’s own right and services should be retained and available for townspeople in Darwen itself. I support the Job Centre being kept open in Darwen
